HOW Five Cities Honoring Connie Holguin

This month’s honoree is Connie Holguin, a 67-year-old cancer warrior. Connie has lived on the central coast for 57 years and in her words ‘there’s no place I’d rather be. It’s a privilege to live near the ocean, hills, and lakes.’ About 12 years ago Connie stopped working to take care of her husband who suffered from diabetes which caused him to have a leg amputation, congested heart failure, kidney, and liver disease. During the time of taking care of her husband, the family had used up their 401K in order to pay household and other bills. When her husband passed away 9 years ago, Connie and their 19-year-old daughter faced the foreclosure of their home. With the help from Rural Legal Assistance, renting two rooms in the home and Connie obtaining a few jobs, she was able to save her home. Last year was the start of her cancer journey. Connie, after several doctor appointments, tests, and scans, was diagnosed with stage 2 squamous cell carcinoma in her rectal area. Connie’s treatment included 7 and a half weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. Due to extreme pain, Connie was unable to work and also lost a renter. Connie’s income was drastically cut in half. Connie’s family members aided Connie, her daughter, and her grandson with financial assistance for everyday living. Radiation left Connie with burns that affected her bodily functions. Connie continued to go to every appointment, enduring the pain that the treatment caused. Thankfully, Connie is cancer free! Connie will continue to be seen by doctors to monitor her. Connie shared ‘I am blessed with the team of doctors that saved my life. I thank God for His healing grace. I thank God I can live longer for my daughter and grandson! The love they show me is priceless. It is good to be alive!’ Connie is thankful for the prayers and support from several churches, family, and friends. Connie is appreciative to HOW Five Cities for honoring her, and to JoAnn and Jean for nominating her.
